This lecture/lab format will provide information and a hands-on experience programming a D-Wave quantum computer system.  The goal of this class is to expand attendees' understanding of quantum computing as implemented on the D-Wave System.  Labs are integrated into each module; attendees will have access to a live system located in Canada.  During class you will learn: 

 

- about the hardware and software environment for a D-Wave quantum computer  

- how to solve and think about problems on a D-Wave quantum computer

- methods of programming a D-Wave quantum computer

- to use tools and run problems on a live D-Wave quantum computing system

- about customer prototype applications and discuss your application ideas. 

 

The class will be held on the 3rd floor of  Secure Offices, 7467 Ridge Rd, Hanover, MD 21076         

 

Class begins at 09:00 ending at 17:00 on both December 3rd and 4th,, 2019.                            

 

There is a $500.00 fee to attend, which will include a light breakfast available at 8:30 AM, and lunch mid-day on both days, this fee is payable using PayPal at the bottom of this registration site.  Please note there are 4 questions you will need to respond to complete registration.

 

System Requirements: Participants are asked to bring their own device to class.  Devices need to be set up prior to class with a 64-bit operating system (Windows, MacOS, or Linux) with Python 3.6 or 3.7 and pip installed. A program for editing code such as Vim or Visual Studio Code will be needed.

 

Education Requirements: It is recommended attendees have a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in one of the following disciplines Computer Science, Math, and Physics or equivalent as well as experience implementing algorithms in languages such as Python, C/C++, Matlab, etc.  Attendees should be comfortable writing and editing programs in a language such as Python that: - import packages such as NumPy - use for-loops- use arrays to store, access and edit data.

 

Instructors:

Dr. Edward (Denny) Dahl received his PhD in physics from Stanford University, his thesis work was with Richard Blankenbecler atthe Stanford Linear Accelerator Center on Hamiltonian methods in lattice gauge theories. Dr. Dahl transitioned into the field of neural networks in the 1980's, applying Hopfield networks to a variety of optimization problems and studying accelerated convergence techniques for stochastic gradient descent.  Dr Dahl obtained a patent for mapping irregular grid architectures to the hypercube architecture of the CM-2 system and was instrumental in the development of a macro programming language for the vector processors of the CM-5.  He has worked in the field of high performance computing for three decades, and has held positions at Thinking Machines Corporation, Teradata and LLNL, and has provided consulting services to eBay, Wells Fargo, JP Morgan Chase and Bank of America.   Denny joined D-Wave Systems in 2012.  

 

Dr. Joel Gottlieb received a B. S. in Physics and Applied Mathematics from University of Michigan in 1983, and a Ph. D in Physics from the University of Wisconsin—Madison in 1990.  Joel has experience as a Senior Unix Software Engineer, a Principal Technical Member at AT&T, A Principal Software Engineer at Intersect Solutions, and a Consultant for Microsoft Inc.  He joined D-Wave Systems as Senior Pre-Sales Analyst in 2016, where he works with the software tools group and is part of the training team assisting new users on D-Wave systems and simulators.
